Understanding Hypertension: Causes and Prevention

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a serious medical condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It's often called the "silent killer" because it may not show symptoms until it causes significant damage.

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension occurs when the force of blood against your artery walls is consistently too high. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. High blood pressure is 130/80 mmHg or higher.

Causes

- Family history

- Age (risk increases with age)

- Obesity

- Lack of physical activity

- High salt intake

- Excessive alcohol consumption

- Stress

- Certain medical conditions

Prevention

1. **Maintain a Healthy Weight**: Losing even a small amount of weight can help lower blood pressure.

2. **Exercise Regularly**: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

3. **Eat a Healthy Diet**: Follow the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

4. **Reduce Sodium**: Limit sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day.

5. **Limit Alcohol**: If you drink, do so in moderation.

6. **Manage Stress**: Practice relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga.

7. **Quit Smoking**: Smoking increases blood pressure and damages blood vessels.

8. **Regular Checkups**: Get your blood pressure checked regularly.
